The article is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician Borys Yevhenovych Paton, an outstanding scientist in the field of welding, metallurgy and metal technology. He was the first in the world to start research on the use of welding processes in space technology. Under the leadership of B. Ye. Paton, medical scientists created a new method of connecting soft tissues of the body, which is now widely implemented in surgical practice.
During the years of independent Ukraine, he made a great personal contribution to the adaptation of the National Academy of Sciences and the entire science of Ukraine to the conditions of the market economy.
